Discussion Content & Questions

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” 14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. 15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” Luke 17:11-19 NIV

 CONTEXT

Question: Based upon Dr. Kirk Walters description of leprosy and the community of lepers, what sticks out about how individuals (with leprosy) suffered? What difficult things did they have to deal with?

“What Jesus is actually offering them is a chance to be cleansed, but it’s going to require something of them…great faith.” Dr. Kirk Walters, Mount Paran North – Senior Pastor

Question: How do the lepers refer to Jesus? Why do you think they use this term for him?

I. His Situation

He Was Not Accepted in the Temple

When (Jesus) saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” Luke 17:14a NIV

“This man (the Samaritan) knew that if I step foot in the temple, then they are going to kill me…with leprosy I would defile it, as a Samaritan I would desecrate it.” Dr. Kirk Walters, Mount Paran North – Senior Pastor

Question: What do you think about what Jesus is asking the lepers to do? What about the Samaritan leper?

II. His Choice

And as they went, they were cleansed. Luke 17:14b NIV

“The longest journey begins with the first step…God’s power is not released in your life until you take the first step to believe Him.” Dr. Kirk Walters, Mount Paran North – Senior Pastor

Question: Is there something specifically, which God is calling you to do? If so, then what might be the first step that you need to take?

III. His Gratitude

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him— and he was a Samaritan. Luke 17:15-16 NIV

He realized that Jesus was the One who made him whole and returned with gratitude.

• Praise

• Humility

• Thanksgiving

Question: What do you think it was like for the Samaritan, who was healed of leprosy, to see Jesus again…face to face?

Question: What is something that Jesus has healed you of, which you are thankful for?

IIII. His Salvation

17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” Luke 17:17-19 NIV

“All ten lepers were cleansed, but only one of them was made whole. Jesus wants to do more than clean you up. He wants to make you whole.” Dr. Kirk Walters, Mount Paran North – Senior Pastor
